Dianthus - Character Introduction

Well, first things first. My name is Dianthus, and I'm a frilled petal dragon. A little lizard with a flower frill, just like mother and father. I was born with an affinity for the element of fire, and so far I've figured out how to use it to breathe fire. It also means I'm more resistant to heat than most petal dragons, so my frill won't burn up even if I breathe fire on it by accident. It's happened a few times.

I used to live in Polaris with the rest of the family. My mother, Rosa, was very kind to me and cared for us as best she could. She was a little forgetful at times, but she never hurt anyone. I guess you could say she kept the family together, despite the differences we all had.

My father Hibiscus was a military man, in the service of the city. There's rarely anything serious going on in Polaris, so that meant most of his work was on the other islands. He didn't spend much time at home, but I admired him a great deal. He always wanted me to be ambitious, to strive for greatness, and I took his advice to heart. When he was on duty, I spent most of my free time on physical exercise.

All of that changed when we received the news of his death. Mother was the first to hear it, and she did not take it well. Went completely off her rocker. I'm ashamed to say it, but we had to put her in the asylum for her own safety. Nothing else could be done. I've trained my whole life so I could protect the ones I love, but what does it matter when the enemy strikes from within?

As irresponsible as ever, my big sister Nymlus fled at the first sign of trouble and now lives out her days in some ramshackle drinking establishment. She's a disgrace, and the less said about her, the better.

I don't believe that the report is telling the whole story. It's much too vague, and I need to know what really happened out there. I've decided that I'm going to the mainland and I'm going to see the truth with my own eyes. Nymlus is staying in Polaris, and she can sleep with every living thing in the city for all I care. I'm taking the first ferry I can find to Citrico Capital and I won't return until I get the answers I'm looking for.
